Strawberry Place

Thu 5 December 2019

Helen Marks, planning and development consultant, has been working with Ryder Architecture on the development of Strawberry Place, immediately to the south of St James’ Park in Newcastle, on behalf of Helios Investment Partners and Marrico Asset Management LLP. This November, we are thrilled to report that the Planning Committee of Newcastle City Council voted to approve the application with a margin of seven to three in support; a fantastic result.

Permission has been obtained for:

  • ·21 storey building with 204 apartments
  • 12 storey office
  • 12 storey hotel with 200 bedrooms
  • 10 floor residential building with 124 flats

Speaking about the development, Helen said “Strawberry Place has long been earmarked as a site for development that could accommodate tall buildings. We are thrilled that the development has been supported by the City Council as it brings with it 200 construction jobs and a further 1200 jobs upon completion, as well as a cash injection of visitor and local spend into the area.”

Construction is planned for early 2021 for occupation in 2022.

Helen continued: “The site is complex for a variety of reasons including land ownership and services. It is also a very prominent site. The proposals, therefore, involved ongoing discussion with a number of stakeholders, including Newcastle City Council. Early engagement and liaison ensured transparent lines of communication, vital in a case such as this, particularly given the timetable for delivery.

Design was clearly a significant consideration in the assessment of the proposals. The design team worked closely with representatives of the City Council to allow for their review of the architectural approach using several tools. This collaborative approach facilitated the client’s timeframes.”
